*This is a sponsored post of a review unit from Huawei Malaysia*
Having reviewed the Honor Mate 8 and Honor 6 Plus and personally using the Honor 7, I recently realised how much of a Huawei fan I’ve become. While I’ve been impressed with the cheaper Honor series of Android smartphones, I know the Huawei series of devices will be much more impressive.
I’ve heard enough about the Huawei P9 – what with Superman, Henry Cavill and Black Widow, Scarlett Johansson as their spokespersons.
That’s not the impressive part though, what’s great about the device is their camera technology. Working in collaboration with Leica to produce a stunning dual lens camera. Leica – the name in high end stunning photography. If you want to take amazing photos, even my photography friends and family went out to get the phone for themselves.
Before I go into my brief experience with the Huawei P9, let’s take a quick look at the specs:-

Huawei P9 dual-lens Leica Camera Test
The camera on default goes into Auto mode, which automatically optimised with their amazing tech to make the pictures look awesome. If you’re a photography enthusiast though, you can kick the phone into “PRO” mode, where you can toggle various settings like ISO, Aperture, Shutter speed etc.
Of course, like most phones today, you can also toggle between multiple Shoot modes like Monochrome (Black & White), Beauty (smoothen skin & complexion), HDR (High Definition, High contrast), Panorama, Night, Timelapse, and more.
One of the few things that I really like about the dual-lens setup in the P9 is the ability to play around with aperture settings. This was one of the highlights in my review of the Honor 6 Plus here.
Being able to adjust the aperture priority basically means that you can adjust your camera’s depth of field. Which, in layman’s terms means you can adjust the focus of your subject, and have the background (or in some cases foreground) blurred for artistic effect.
As you can see in the sample picture above, I have the same subject and adjusted the depth of field to focus on the soft toy and have the whole shot in focus in the top picture; and toggled to the widest aperture setting at f/2.2 for the rear camera, and have the toy in focus and the background blurred.
Truly the wonders of dual-lens smartphone cameras. Coupled with great camera technology, of course.
Picture quality in a word – STUNNING!
Here are some of the sample pictures that I managed to capture in my short review period with the Huawei P9. Mind you, they’re just images from my daily smartphone snaps. Images are resized but not altered or edited in any way, so click to view.
Just as I was impressed with the Honor 6 Plus as well as my personal Honor 7, the Huawei P9 truly impresses with its camera capability. And that’s just me as an everyday smartphone camera user.

If you want to know the capabilities of the camera on a true professional photographer, I suggest you check out my favourite photographer friend, Edwin Tan, award-winning wedding photographer genius try out the Huawei P9 Plus.

OK. I know this is not a review comparison. But with so many people around me being iFanbois (ahem, Hubby) and the boom (??) of iPhone-ography, I have to point out how this Huawei P9 beats the competition, truly.
While my sample pictures might not be that inspiring to you, but hopefully, looking at some of the images of how a professional photographer can do with the P9+ should be the most compelling reason. Full stop.
Seriously though, the features and functionalities in the Huawei P9 is nothing to scoff at. From the build quality, to the impressive camera functionality, to the faster security update compared to other Android phones – it’s really a major contender if you’re in the market for a smartphone today.
If you’re an Android user, the RM 2,099 price tag is perfect! For a flagship device that doesn’t break the RM 3,000 mark like Samsung devices. And if you’re an iPhone user, you really really should reconsider your wishlist. Because this Huawei P9 is one serious contender.
