I have been using the Logitech Bluetooth Mouse M557 for about a year now. I’ve always swapped mice between Logitech and Microsoft models. For some reason, these are the 2 go-to brands when I’m on the lookout for a new mouse. For Microsoft, I’ve been a loyal supporter of the Microsoft Arc Mouse (read about it here) and the Microsoft Arc Touch Mouse which I upgraded to after.

Firstly, I’m a sucker for the beauty of the design of the Microsoft Arc series. They’re ergonomically designed for a perfect grip, and looks absolutely futuristic and gorgeous. After a long time using the Arc mouse, I’m happy to get back to another Microsoft mouse again. And thanks to the folks from Microsoft Malaysia, I got my hands on the affordable, Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 1850.

A little overview on the Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 1850:-
- Wireless mouse with plug-and-play nano transceiver
- Ambidextrous design : comfortable for left / right hand use
- Up to 6 month battery life
- Available in 5 colours : Black, Wool Blue, Light Orchid, Pantone Purple and Flame Red

Hardware : Design & Build Quality

Yes, the nice people at Microsoft included one AA battery for you, so you just have to pop it in and use straight away. The user manual for this plug-and-play mouse is rather unnecessary, in my opinion. It’s rather self explanatory.

At the box packaging, you’ll see pictorial instructions as well.
Unfortunately (for me), the review unit I got is the Black coloured one. Generic, I suppose. Although, those who know me would know I’ll go ga-ga if I got the Flame Red version instead. 🙂

Nevertheless, the small mouse fits nicely in my ladies hand. For a man, it might be on the smaller side, though. But then again, this is meant to be a portable “mobile” mouse, so the small size makes sense.
At the bottom, you open the compartment to insert the AA battery and store the nano transceiver when not in use. A small Power On/Off toggle is just beneath it.
What’s great about the Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 1850 is that it’s ambidextrous design.

Which means, whether you’re left or right handed, it works for you. Enough with the left hander complains, this one is the mouse to get!
Performance
I am using the mouse now, as I type this review. No matter how good a laptop trackpad is, I am one of those people who will always prefer using an external mouse.
There are no fancy double finger scrolling, middle button click action, or anything like that here. This is a no-nonsense, straight forward mouse. What can I say? Sensitivity between the mouse and the nano transceiver is good. Even if the nano transceiver is on the other side of the laptop to where the mouse is.

I’m picky about scroll wheels on mouse. I like the rigged (notched) feeling when scrolling, versus some mouse with smooth scrolling. You know what I mean? Which is why I wasn’t truly a fan of the touch scroll wheel on the Microsoft Touch Mouse range. While scrolling on a touchpad on a mouse is supposed to emulate the feeling of a touchpad of the laptop, I’m old school in preferring the scroll wheel. A scroll wheel that has rigs, to be exact.
If you’re like me, then you’ll like this Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 1850. The rigged scrolling is not hard scrolling, it sits at just the right scrolling sweet spot.
Battery Life
The product literature states that with the one (1) AA battery, the mouse can last up to 6 months of use. Obviously, I didn’t get a chance to test that in my limited review period. But I can attest to the fact that Microsoft mice have always delivered exceptional battery life.
My usual usage pattern includes turning off the power when the mouse is not in use. Which is easy in this case, with just a small toggle underneath.
Pricing & Availability
The listed Recommended Retail Price (RRP) of the Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 1850 is at RM 49. Which is, seriously an affordable price tag for a really good mobile mouse. One that performs amazingly, and is handy to be carried along with you everywhere your laptop goes.
It comes with a three (3) year limited warranty as well, according to the Microsoft Malaysia website here.
Conclusion
I am thoroughly impressed with the Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 1850.
At a RM 49 price tag, it’s a no-brainer if you’re looking for a good portable mouse to carry along with your laptop everywhere you go.
What I Like
- Affordable RM 49 price tag
- Ambidextrous design for left or right hand use
- Good scroll and click feel
What I Dislike
- Might be small for a man’s hand
- No fancy killer features
Really can’t think of any cons to list anymore.
The fact that the mouse is small and mobile, the fact that the nano transceiver is easily stowable in the hidden battery compartment, the fact that it’s only RM 49. Whether you’re a student or a professional looking for a portable mouse, just go get this. Don’t think!
