*This device is a review unit from Lazada Malaysia*
Not too long ago, my aunt posted a question on Facebook on ways to copy her images from her iPhone and iPad to her hard drive or SD card. (Hi, Auntie Jan!) There were several replies and one of the suggestions I gave was to install iCloud or Dropbox for auto photo backup to the cloud, which you can then easily copy to your computer later.
While this is a viable option, you might not always have internet connectivity to backup your files to the cloud. Personally, this is an issue I face quite regularly, especially when I’m traveling on a long vacation.
You see, in my dive trips, we take a lot of underwater and vacation pictures, which needs to be backed up daily. Some of the pictures are on your smart devices and some on your camera. Other than lugging your laptop with you on a vacation just to store these pictures, there has to be a better solution, right?
Enter Kingston MobileLite Wireless! This little gadget solves this problem… and more.

Unboxing and Hardware Overview
Thanks to Lazada Malaysia and Kingston, my review unit came with a 4GB Kinsgton SD Card, but is usually sold separately. The box packaging for the MobileLite Wireless is simple, with high level overview on the features of this gadget.
Inside the box, you’ll find the MobileLite Wireless gadget itself, a USB to micro USB cable, micro SD card adapter and a simple User Manual.
The MobileLite Wireless is rather small and light – about the size of a…. hmmm… laptop power adapter, but way lighter at 98 grams. At 17.3 mm thin, the only button available is the Power On/Off button that also toggles the WiFi and Connectivity/ Pairing mode.
There are 3 ports in total – the SD card reader on one end, and a full size USB and a micro USB port on the other. More on these later.
Setting Up MobileLite Wireless
First thing first, charge the MobileLite Wireless to standby for use.
Launching the app the first time, shows you quick setup guide on how to pair, connect and use the MobileLite app with your MobileLite gadget.
The included manual has very in-depth information on how to setup the gadget, as well as basic functions.
Now, that you’re all set, let’s power on and pair the gadget with your smart device!
There are 3 indicator lights. (L-R) Power On, WiFi connectivity and Web connectivity.
The Kingston MobileLite Wireless connects (or pairs) with you smart device using WiFi connectivity. Once you connect yoru smart device with “MobileLite Wireless” on your WiFi networks, that’s it! Your MobileLite Wireless and your smart device is paired!
Reader : File Backup & Management
This is the awesomest part – MobileLite Wireless allows you to read and copy files from SD card (via the SD card reader slot), thumb drives or external HDD (via the USB port).
MobileLite Wireless works as a portable card reader to give you unlimited access to all of your data, anywhere you are.
Once paired, you can use the MobileLite app on your smart device to browse and copy files (pictures, music, video and documents) from your phone or tablet to any connected storage (SD card, thumb drive or hard drive) through the MobileLite Wireless…. and vice versa.
As mentioned in the start of the blogpost, this is truly the handiest feature. The amount of time, I want to copy pictures from my smart device or SD card from the camera to another storage (thumb drive or external Hard Drive) without having my laptop with me. With this MobileLite Wireless gadget, using the installed app, I can easily copy pictures from my phone / tablet to an SD card/ thumb drive / hard drive or from my camera’s SD card to a thumb drive / hard drive or even to my smartphone or tablet to share on social media!
Check the video below on simple copy function guide on copying pictures from your tablet to a connected thumb drive using the MobileLite Wireless app.
Streamer : Media Streaming
During our vacations, me and Hubby usually copies movies and TV shows we downloaded to our tablets or hard drive, to watch on board in the flight or in the hotel room. Sometimes, because we don’t have gigabites of free storage on the device or SD card, we might have to delete some stuff to make room.
MobileLite Wireless is great for travel. It lets you stream up to three movies from Flash cards and USB Flash drives to three different devices at once.
What I’ve done in this review was copy a few TV shows to the complimentary SD card from Kingston, inserted into the SD card slot on the MobileLite Wireless.
Using the MobileLite app on my tablet, I browsed to the SD card and open the video file copied.
Without any cables, I’m streaming the video from the SD card, through the MobileLite Wireless to my tablet!
The best part is, the MobileLite Wireless allows you to stream up to 3 different video files to 3 different users / devices simultaneously! Which means, I can copy a bunch of videos (and pictures or music) on the SD card, Hubby can watch one video and I can watch a different video (or listen to music), streaming from the same MobileLite Wireless, at the same time!!!
One device, 3 different users! Powerful stuff, huh?
Charger : Power Bank
In case you’re worried that with the power usage of gadgets and devices these days will drain your battery, and you permanently carry a Power Bank with you everywhere you go, here’s one less item to carry. The MobileLite Wireless also works as a power bank charger.
Use MobileLite Wireless to charge your phone or other device. Stay productive and keep the power flowing without having to plug into a wall outlet.
There’s an included USB to micro USB cable in the box, which can be plugged into your smartphone or tablet to charge.
The included USB to micro USB cable also doubles as a sync or wired connectivity cable.
Depending on your device, in my case, my Samsung tablet, I can plug in the USB to microUSB cable between the tablet and the MobileLite Wireless to copy, backup and transfer files or stream media via the wired, cable connection instead.
Pricing and Availability
Kingston MobileLite Wireless is now available on sale, since 31 March 2014, at a Recommended Retail Price (RRP) of RM 259.
Good news – Kingston MobileLite Wireless can be purchased online from Lazada Malaysia at http://www.lazada.com.my/kingston-mobilelite-wireless-523635.html currently at a discounted price of RM 169 for a limited time only.
This is certainly a handy device instead. I can certainly see how I would be carrying this with me for my traveling (work or vacations). Specifically, I see this being a handy gadget for:-
- Photo Backup and Social Media sharing
- Backup pictures from my camera to an external HDD to free up space for more vacation pictures
- Copying pictures taken from my camera to my smartphone for immediate social media sharing
- Backup pictures from my smartphone to my external HDD
- Video Storage and Streaming
- Watching videos on the flight (ie. short travel routes or AirAsia flights without in-flight entertainment)
- Sharing photos with friends and family (without storing on precious space on my tablet)
- Power Bank
- One less power bank to carry around, you can always do with more battery juice, especially when traveling
If you’re looking for a device like this, or think that this is a handy gadget that will be useful for you, I suggest you get the Kingston MobileLite Wireless.
Handy gadget indeed!
