Sennheiser MOMENTUM On-Ear Headphones Review

*This device is a loaned review unit from Sennheiser Malaysia*

Last week, I wrote about the launch of Sennheiser Malaysia’s first Flagship Concept Store opening at Bangsar Shopping Centre (BSC) here, and how impressed I was with the wide range of products that they have on display and for sale in the local market. Sennheiser has always been a brand name that many associate with high quality headphones and audio technology.

Since the launch, I got my hands on a review unit of the newly launched Sennheiser MOMENTUM On-Ear headphones – the highlighted product during their Sennheiser [Sound x Style] showcase with H&M Malaysia. The Sennheiser  MOMENTUM On-Ear headphone is marketed for the consumer market, made of high quality material, with a premium design that’s both fashionable without sacrificing great sound quality.

Having tested the headphones, blasting music on Spotify on my laptop, here’s my full review of the headphones.

Unboxing the Sennheiser MOMENTUM On-Ear headphones

Before I begin, here’s a quick overview of the feature of the Sennheiser MOMENTUM On-Ear headphones:-

  • Groundbreaking technologies : open-type headphones, electrostatics, one way transducer or ring radiator driver
  • High performance : equipped with Sennheiser’s proprietary 18Ω transducers of high-end technology headphones
  • Exquisite build quality : headband and earpads finished in high-tech Alcantara® sourced directly from Milan
  • Available in 7 colours : Pink, Blue, Green, Ivory, Red, Brown and Black
  • Pricing at RRP of RM 829

The box packaging is a standard square box with details of the headphones, images and simple technical information on the sides.

It states on the box itself that the MOMENTUM On-Ear works well for iPhone users with easy controls for volume up/down, Play/Pause, voice control and more. More on that later.

Inside the box, you’ll find the goodies. Nestled in a perfect cut out foam protection, there’s a headphone shaped velvet carrying case that holds your headphones. When you open it, there’s another drawstring pouch and inside it is where the Sennheiser MOMENTUM On-Ear headphones are. Along in the zip, velvet case, is a mesh pocket with a 3.5 mm audio jack, standard connection cable.

Inside the box, underneath the case for your headphones, is a Quick User Manual guide. Which, trust me, you really don’t need. The headphones are easy enough to understand and use.

Design and Build Quality

As you can see, I got myself the black unit, with a contrasting red cable. The MOMENTUM On-Ear are not huge cans, really. The bigger and older brother is really the Sennheiser MOMENTUM which are over-the-ear headphones (RRP of RM 1,429) made of leather and aluminium.

The MOMENTUM On-Ear I have here, is the consumer market headphones made with fine suede all around the headband and ear pads, with aluminium finishing and adjustable headband. Available in 7 distinctive pastel colours – pink, blue, green, ivory, red, brown and black – the headband and earpads are finished in high-tech Alcantara® sourced directly from Milan. Fashionable to match your OOTD (Outfit Of The Day) or go classic with brown or black coloured ones.

I would’ve wished I got the red coloured one for review (red is my favourite colour) but this black one with red stitching and cable looks just as gorgeous for the understated elegance. I really like the black suede material on the headband, with the red stitching. I’m a sucker for contrasting stitch!

The padded earpads feels very soft on my ear and provided me with oh-so-much comfort wearing it the whole day, blasting music while I work. Including now, as I’m writing this review and listening to Avicii. *grin*

Audio and Sound Quality

High-tech German engineering at its best. As you can see with the video above, the Sennheiser MOMENTUM On-Ear are not only build with high quality material, but the thought and precision that goes into making the headphones are so well thought out to provide the best sound quality for your listening pleasure.

In my last week reviewing the MOMENTUM On-Ear headphones, I am really sad to think that I might be parting with it soon. Here’s my quick summary on the sound quality:-

  • Bass is strong but not overpowering – especially listening to deep bass in some R&B and dance tracks (like Avicii)
  • Voices are clear and crisps – when listening to ballads and vocal tracks
  • Volume is loud enough – with the noise canceling working just well enough, that I can still hear (faintly) my phone notification beeping

I was listening to music at 50% volume and the sound was nice and clear enough to provide loud and enjoyable music while I work.

Just to test it out, I tried turning the volume all the way up to 100% and boy – it sounded like I was right there in the room with the band or musician. The interesting thing though, is that even at the maximum volume, there was no cracking or breaking of the audio quality. Music still sounds good, with strong bass and treble and vocal. Of course, at this volume, you’ll almost guarantee to miss any possible surrounding sound.

And you’re also guaranteed to bob along (and dance along) to your favourite tracks. The quality is that good!!!

There are a couple of occasions that the left side of the headphone goes soft, which I suspect is caused by a loose cable connection. Having tapped the left earpad or wiggle the connection cable a little, it’s all OK again.

If you’re using iPhone or iPod, you’ll be happy to know that the Sennheiser MOMENTUM series comes with a Smart iRemote with Mic, along the middle of the audio cable. The control consists of only 3 buttons, “+”, Sennheiser logo and “-“. As highlighted in the box packaging, when you use the MOMENTUM On-Ear with your iPhone, you can:-

  • Turn Volume Up and Down – with the “+” and “-” buttons
  • Press Play and Pause – with the Sennheiser logo button
  • Answer / end / reject call – using the Sennheiser logo button
  • Skip to next / previous track – using the “+” and “-” buttons
  • Activate voice control – press and hold Sennheiser logo button to talk, with the built-in microphone

Unfortunately, because I’m NOT an Apple device owner, I didn’t get to test these functions.  Hubby, the one with all the iDevices, was unfortunately out of town during my review and I didn’t get to test it on his iPhone.  😦

I am very impressed with the Sennheiser MOMENTUM On-Ear headphones. For the price RM 849, I think this is worth the buy if you’re looking for good headphone “cans” that are not too big, stylish and yet provide amazing audio quality.

Pricing and Availability

Sennheiser MOMENTUM On-Ear headphones are available on sale right now, at the price of RM 849 in any of the 7 colours, at any authorised Sennheiser retailers.

To ensure that you get the authentic, original version of the MOMENTUM On-Ear headphones, best to buy them at the NEW Sennheiser Flagship Store at BSC instead? *wink* That way, you’ll be sure that you get the real deal! I’m sure you’ll get a chance to test it out with a display unit there before you make the purchase, too.

  1. Does not appear to be authentic exterior box and case for the Momentum; completely different in U.S. unless revised markedly in interim
