Toshiba launches Z830 Ultrabook, AIO desktop PC and REGZA tablets in Malaysia

2011-11-24 Toshiba Launch 065

Today on 24th November 2011, in Bedroom Club at Pavillion, KL, Tele Dynamics aka Toshiba Malaysia launched a full suite of products to the media, bloggers and invited guests.

This includes an All-In-One desktop PC, 2 Android Honeycomb tablets, an Ultrabook and a projector.

The event started at approximately 11.30am and the turnout was good. The hosts of the event were Ben and Phat Fabes from FlyFM who joyously introduced us to various Toshiba executives to talk about the launch and the events we’re about to see.

They also did a mini-sketch on stage giving us a walkthrough of the products.

Both emcees were funny and created a lively tone on a stage setup like a living room.

Let’s go through in detail all the tech goodies launched…

Toshiba Qosmio DX730 All-In-One Desktop PC

2011-11-24 Toshiba Launch 030This AIO Desktop PC is Toshiba’s first All-in-one desktop PC. Featuring a large 23” full 1080p HD multi-touch display with matching wireless keyboard and mouse.

The Toshiba Qosmio DX730 comes with a 2nd Generation Intel Core i5 or i7 processor, 4GB of DDR3 SDRAM (expandable up to 16GB), 1TB hard drive (expandable up to 2TB), 2 X USB 3.0 port, 4 X USB 2.0 port, HDMI In & Out port, built-in DVD SuperMulti or Blu-Ray ROM Drive and Onkyo stereo speakers with built-in subwoofer.

One of the highlights of this AIO PC is the USB Sleep ad Charge technology – where devices plugged in will charge when your desktop PC is in sleep mode. This means, you can leave your tablets, smartphones, etc plugged in to charge overnight when you sleep.

The Toshiba Qosmio DX730 AIO desktop PC is available in Precious Black and Luxe White colours variation.

Additionally, there are additional Toshiba portable storage options which includes external hard drives and USB thumb drives.

Toshiba Android powered REGZA tablets

2011-11-24 Toshiba Launch 096Remember Toshiba REGZA TVs? Yeap. Toshiba has today announced 2 variations of their REGZA AT 1S0 (7’) and AT100 (10.1”) high resolution Android tablets.

Both tablets are running on Android Honeycomb 3.2 OS on NVIDIA Tegra 2 processors. Both has 1GB of DDR2 RAM, fitted with HSPA+, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity. Both has a 5 megapixel rear and 2 megapixel front facing camera.

The 7” AT1S0 has a built-in 16GB of storage, comes with mini USB, micro HDMI and micro SD ports.

Weighing in at 379g, it’s not exactly the slimmest 7’ tablets in the market. What I like though is the rubber backing that gives you a good grip in your hands.

a 7’ tablet fits perfectly in your hands and is much more pocketable (or handbag-eable) than the normal 10.1” tablets out there. But the Toshiba REGZA AT1S0 tablet is rather thick and heavy.

The 10.1” AT100 on the other hand, has 32GB of storage comes with a full USB 2.0, mini USB, full HDMI port and a full SD card reader. No additional adapters needed for this one with all the full ports. Nice!

Weighing in at 765g, it is also on the rather heavier side of tablets (maybe I’m spoilt by the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1). Once again, the rubber groove backing is present here as well.

There are additional accessories available for their REGZA tablets. As if the rubber groove backing is not enough for you, you can opt to purchase any of these coloured back plate to protect your tablets.

I must say that original cover accessories like these are very cool.

Also notice that there is a docking station that is available as well.

Toshiba Protege Z830 Ultrabook

2011-11-24 Toshiba Launch 023Somewhat of a latecomer to the Ultrabook market in Malaysia (Acer Aspire S3, Asus Zenbook have all been launched and selling in the market already), Toshiba’s Ultrabook is one to consider if you’re in the market for one.

The Toshiba Protege Z830 boasts to be the world’s thinnest and lightest 13.3” Ultrabook. At 15.9mm at the thickest point, it is the thinnest (at the thickest point) of all Ultrabooks. At 1.12kg, it is also the lightest and is 20% lighter than their award-winning Protege R830 thin and light business laptop series.

Here’s a quick rundown of the Toshiba Protege Z830 Ultrabook specs:-

  • 13.3” WXGA HD LED Backlight TFT display
  • Intel Core i5 or i7 Processor
  • 6GB DDR3 RAM
  • 128GB SSD storage
  • 2 X USB 2.0, 1 X USB 3.0 (Sleep and Charge), RGB, HDMI, SD Card reader, Ethernet LAN port, Kensington lock
  • Multi-touch trackpad with physical click buttons
  • Keyboard is backlit and spill resistant
  • Full magnesium alloy chassis (no aluminium or plastic here)
  • 8-cell Li-Ion battery (vs only 6-cell in other Ultrabooks)

What distinguishes the Toshiba Z830 Ultrabook from the ones you see in the market today are a few things. First, it’s the first and possibly only Ultrabook to have full ports – Ethernet LAN (to connect to Internet LAN), HDMI (the others might dismiss this) and RGB port (to hook up to a projector) which you won’t see in other Ultrabooks.

I know this sounds silly, but look at the specs of other Ultrabooks in the market and you’d think a LAN and RGB port should be compulsory, right? But sadly, they are missing from the other brand’s Ultrabooks.

2011-11-24 Toshiba Launch 071

Secondly, the backlit keyboard is a Godsend. This is already available in the Macbook Air, of course. But it’s sorely missing from the other Ultrabooks, except this Toshiba.

Additionally, the keyboard is also spill resistant – which passes the test with 30ml of water spilled onto it. Nice for the clumsy people like me who occasionally spills their drinks everywhere.

2011-11-24 Toshiba Launch 066

Thirdly, the trackpad. You’d notice that Toshiba has included their fingerprint scan on it as additional security. This is one of the few features that I missed from a Toshiba laptop that I’ve had before.

The trackpad supports multi-touch and has physical left and right click buttons – unlike the Acer Aspire S3 that I have which is flushed.

Boy – do I like this Ultrabook. It looks sleek and sexy. With the impressive specs, this is surely one Ultrabook that will tempt those who wants an Ultrabook for personal and business use. All the full ports will definitely be a deciding factor!

The full chassis of the Toshiba Z830 features a brushed metal finishing on their full magnesium alloy body. “Understated elegance” was the word used by the Toshiba execs to describe this.

2011-11-24 Toshiba Launch 028

Yes – the Toshiba Z830 is thin. It doesn’t have the tapering slim to thick body like the other Ultrabooks. It’s actually very light, too. I did a quick weight comparison with my Acer S3 and it is significantly lighter.

Here it is – the Toshiba Protege Z830 next to the Acer Aspire S3.

The Toshiba Protege Z830 is available in the market immediately today after this launch and is priced at RRP (Recommended Retail Price) of RM 3,999 for the Core i5 model and RM 4,799 for the Core i7 model. Both comes with only 128GB SSD with no mention of 256GB SSD model.
