Restaurant Review : Mak’s Chee Authentic Wonton @ Pavilion Elite (with new Swiss Chicken Leg dish, Opening promo and contest)

As a (primarily) tech blogger, I don’t get a lot of invites to food or restaurant reviews. I started writing about food, mostly from personal experiences – mostly for the love of food porn photography. But as I grew to write so much about food, I grew quite a healthy list of Restaurant Reviews on the blog.

So, when I got the invite for Mak’s Chee new launch, I was more than happy to oblige. I’ve heard so much about this wonton (“wantan” same-same la, different spelling) restaurant from Hong Kong, I couldn’t resist to try it out as I hear the queue for their popular original branch at 1 Utama can get quite crazy.

 

Mak’s Chee Authentic Wonton

Mak’s Chee is a casual quick restaurant serving authentic Hong Kong style prawn wonton noodles, a 100-year old recipe from Mak’s family.

Is it about the noodle or about the prawn wonton? Or is it the stock? All three, actually.

The Managing Director of Mak’s Chee, Mr Gary Crestejo, is extremely passionate about this century old recipe, and the premium imported ingredients used in making the seemingly simple bowl of noodles.

I got to try their noodles for the first time that day, so instead of their Signature Sea Prawn Wonton Soup Noodle (RM 14.90 for big bowl), I went with a combination to try a bit of both their wonton and beef.

The thin, springy noodles

Their noodles is unlike most of the wonton noodle you sample in your local kopitiam in Malaysia. It’s thin (you can choose a thicker noodle, too) and it’s really springy. Best consumed when it’s served hot to avoid soggy-ness.

I can truly say the texture took some getting used to, but I can certainly appreciate the freshness of a handmade noodle. Very reminiscent of the Hong Kong style wonton noodles in Hong Kong. But perhaps a little different for regular Malaysian taste buds.

Prawn wontons hiding underneath

As illustrated in the menu, the prawn wonton is hiding underneath your bowl of noodle soup.

The prawn wonton is amazing! It is indeed super delicious and something they should indeed be very proud of. It’s a whole prawn (errr… shrimp?) in there. Not prawn paste. It’s fresh catch sea prawns, seasoned with their premium prawn roe.

And they make a big deal about it not being a pork wonton.

If you’re a big fan of wonton, you can also order them a la carte – Signature Sea Prawn Wonton  Soup – Small 8pc (RM 15.90) or Big 12pc (RM 22.90).

Or have them deep fried – Small 8pc (RM 16.90) or Big 12pc (RM 23.90).

The fried wonton is delicious. The curse of me with deep fried anything, right? I can eat this every meal of every day. Forever and ever. Fat die me!

If you’re not a fan of prawn wonton, or if you prefer dry wonton noodles instead, there are other items on the menu, of course. Like this porky dry noodle.

Sweet & Sour Pork Dry Noodle (Small – RM 12.90; Big – RM 14.90)

Because Mak’ Chee wonton noodles are so delicious, there’s an extensive menu of them in various combinations, soup / dry – with either prawn wonton, pork & prawn dumpling, beef brisket, beef tendon, prawn roe, sweet & sour pork, vegetarian (shredded ginger & spring onion, HK Kailan with oyster sauce and more.

 

New outlet @ Pavilion Elite

One of the key highlights of this Mak’s Chee Food Tasting event is to witness their new branch at Pavilion Elite, following the success of their original branch at 1 Utama.

Mak’s Chee Authentic Wonton at Pavilion Elite was officially open for business just this week, on 1st May 2017.

If you work around the place, go check it out for lunch soon. If you’re there one weekend, make sure you pop by to try this much raved about place and their delicious wonton noodles.

Mak’s Chee at Level 7, Pavilion Elite

If you’re not familiar, Pavilion Elite is the new wing extension of the original Pavilion Shopping Mall. You can access them on the other side of the restaurant section where Starbucks, La Bodega etc are. This new wing house some other big names like JD Sports, Toys R Us and more.

Mak’s Chee is on Level 7 of this new wing of Pavilion Elite.

Mak’s Chee is a casual restaurant, somewhere for your quick meal – an affordable yet satisfying meal of wonton noodles.

The seating are simple, with table seating with benches along the wall. If you’re dining alone, there’s a row of bar stools against the left wall of the shop. The kitchen is exposed, where you can watch the chef prepare your meal.

 

Swiss Chicken Leg Special

In conjunction with the launch of their new Pavilion Elite branch, Mak’s Chee is introducing a limited time promotional item on their menu – Swiss Chicken Leg.

According to Mr. Gary Crestejo, Managing Director of Mak’s Chee, Swiss Chicken Leg is a specialty of Hong Kong food culture. It is slow-cooked with sweet soy sauce and a variety of herbs and spices.  Despite the name “Swiss,” it is unrelated to Switzerland, and indeed a local Hong Kong recipe.

This promotional dish is now offered at an introductory promotional price starting from RM 9.90 per plate from 4th May to 31st July, 2017.

We got to sample the sweet sauced chicken leg, and boy – it is delicious!

Original Swiss Chicken Leg (RM 9.90)

The chicken is nice and juicy, fresh meat and perfectly cooked. The chicken must’ve been stewing in the sweet soya sauce for hours, perfectly braised. We got additional helping of the sweet sauce, and it’s indeed very much welcomed.

Look at that picture of that sunny side up egg, amiright? So tempted to poke that watery yolk for some #yolkporn perfection!
