Restaurant Review : Yuen Buffet Steamboat @ Kelana Jaya, PJ

It’s been rainy season these days. Perfect time for steamboat dinner!

It has been awhile since I last had any steamboat dinner. My last good experience was having Farmland Porridge Steamboat at Jalan Maharajalela. Which unfortunately, I found out that they are no longer in operations. Seems they were operating without a license. 🙁

So, when me and the family had craving for steamboat, I started Google-ing for places and came across Yuen Buffet Steamboat.

Where Is It?

Some of you might recognise the name – Yuen Buffet Steamboat. It used to be a hugely popular steamboat place at Sunway Mentari. They have since relocated to Kelana Jaya, at Zenith Coroporate Park, somewhere behind Paradigm Mall.

For me, this was the first I heard of the place, as I’m rather clueless on popular steamboat places. Not something I eat regularly, so I have little clue to where to go and what’s good.

And it did take me sometime to look for the place. I Waze-d the location, got into Zenith Corporate Park.

Had to take parking ticket to circle the shoplots. Didn’t realised the roads around the shoplots were one-way roads.

Got to the last stretch where Yuen Buffet Steamboat is, and there were no parking spaces. Realised I arrived at the end of the road and had to pay the parking at exit. No way to turn around.

So, I wasted like RM2, I think, just going around the block. Then paid again to come back in. A little stupid, to be honest. Grrr….

Ambiance

While there are plenty of round tables that occupies almost 2-3 shoplots, the place is packed!

We were there on a weekend, of course, and there’s a queue waiting to get in. So, poor hungry us had to watch other people enjoy their delicious piping hot steamboat meal, while we drool outside and wait for a table to open up.

The spread of seafood, meats, balls etc

Never forgetting the vegetables section, of course
An assortment of sauces, from spicy to sweet to everything in between

Other than the buffet spread of seafood, meats and all – there are also several buffet spread for non steamboat items. You can have friend noodles or rice, some curries, chicken wings and other fried items.

Was told the chicken wings were delicious. Something to line your stomach, I suppose, while you wait for the soup to boil.

Unfortunately though, as soon as a fresh batch of chicken wings were served, they all disappeared in mere seconds. Didn’t get to take any that night. Maybe next time.

Menu and Pricing

The menu is simple. It is a buffet, after all. So, there’s really only one pricing.

Actually, there are 3 pricing tiers – for Adults and Child below 13 years:-

  • Adult & Child (above 150cm) : RM 34.00 per pax
  • Child (between 131-150cm) : RM 17.00 per pax
  • Child (between 100 – 130cm) : RM 10.00 per pax

And it’s measured by height, which I find amusing. So, depending on how tall your kid is, determines how much he/she will likely eat.

Prices are inclusive of GST.

Conclusion

Soup base is mixed - clear soup or tom yam
Soup base is mixed – clear soup or tom yam

I am a fan of split clear and tom yum soup base. Some food are better with clear broth, while some taste better with something spicier.

However, the soup base (both clear and tom yum) at Yuen Buffet Steamboat is mediocre.

Yuen Buffet Steamboat, Kelana Jaya - Our table

Me and my family was a group of 6 of us, and one 4 year old. And the picture above was the start of the meal. Nowhere close to all the food we hoarded from the buffet.

Because we waited 30 mins to get a seat, and another 10 more minutes to get food from the buffet spread and then wait for the soup to boil; we were all hangry (hungry + angry) so we wolved down our food. Only after we satisfied that initial hunger, we started to enjoy more varieties.

To be honest, it wasn’t great. Nothing stood out, specifically delicious or good quality.

The best part of it all is that it’s buffet steamboat, and you get to stuff your face silly. All for RM 34 per pax. And that’s a good deal.

The bad part, is that there’s a wait at dinner time, with people subsiding around 9.30pm -ish. I’m not a fan of waiting or queueing. So if you’re one who eats dinner late, the place closes at 12 midnight, with the last entry permitted at 10.30pm.

Would I come back?

Well, I might. Cheap, easy, buffet steamboat. Until I find another good alternative. So any suggestions?
