Acer Malaysia Launched Swift 7 – World’s First Laptop Under 1cm – and more

Last week, I attended a tech event again, after a long hiatus. And it was a good one by Acer Malaysia, promising to launch a sexy new laptop.

You see, I have been so busy with work, I hardly kept up with the latest products in the thin and light ultrabook laptop category anymore. Although, I do know that with IFA Berlin that happened in early September 2016, where most manufacturers introduced their latest and greatest, there must be some new stuff hitting the Malaysian market soon.

True enough, Acer launched a slew of products for a big audience of lifestyle and tech journalists and bloggers and influencers last week.

The launch event, in my opinion, were a little cringe-worthy, stuck-in-the-90s style; with laser lights and smoke machines, dancers moving with the laptops, interspersed with product videos on the projection backdrop. Short of confetti guns going off at the end, the products were finally all lined up in pedestal displays in front of the stage. I thought if they stuck to the simplicity of just the videos and spotlight on products on the pedestal, it would’ve done the trick. No need for the theatrics.

What we were ultimately introduced to were thin and light laptops, an All-in-one desktop PCs, a gaming monitor. There was even an announcement of an Extended Warranty offer for their products.

Even the product demo showcasing a staged banter between 2 product managers seemed forced, overly rehearsed and unnatural. Ahhh – That’s the “beauty” of most tech events, I’m afraid.

Acer Malaysia Launch - Swift 7, Swift 3

All these aside, the hero of the launch is the Acer Swift 7 – their thinnest and lightest of their laptop range.

So, let’s get to the deets.

Acer Swift 7 – World’s 1st Laptop under 1 cm

Acer Swift 7
Acer Swift 7

Their top-of-the-line laptop offering under their Swift (thin and light) series, and this one is a looker. It’s biggest selling point is, no doubt, the slim profile.

Sitting at 9.98 mm thin, it’s the thinnest laptop in their range, and according to Acer, in the world. A 13.3″ laptop running on 7th Gen Intel Core i5 processor (Kaby Lake) with 256 GB SSD storage with 8 GB RAM memory. It weighs 1.1kg with a battery that will supposedly last you a full work day of 9 hours battery life.

Spec wise, it’s really not the highest range of Core i7 for the power user who does a lot of photo and video editing, but for the normal mobile warriors, who multi-tasks and needs a machine good for work and play.

The Acer execs made a big deal talking about how thin and light the Swift 7 is – 9.98 mm (a mere 0.02 mm short of 1 cm) which is the thinnest laptop in the world thus far) and 1.1 kg light (a far cry from those brick of a laptop back in the 90s).

Sexy in Black & Gold

Model’s RBF aside, the Swift 7 is one sexy laptop in matter black and classy gold in an all aluminium unibody design. Design and build quality wise, from my initial hands on impression at the launch – seems premium and stylish.

A few other features highlighted at the (lengthy) product demo includes 178 degrees viewing angle on the Full HD IPS screen, HD Webcam with HDR, large trackpad for 4-finger scrolling and navigation, drop resistant (up to about 4 feet, if I remember correctly).

Customers of the Swift 7 will enjoy Premium Warranty Service, which includes free system health checks and cleaning, next business day turnaround repair and special counter service directly attended by technician during warranty period without any additional charge.

As a long time Acer laptop customer, I am super tempted to get the Swift 7. Super tempted.

Acer Swift 7 will be available on sale, starting tomorrow 23 Nov 2016, online at 11Street Malaysia, or via their authorised resellers nationwide, at a Recommended Retail Price (RRP) of RM 4,999.

If the Swift 7’s close to RM 5,000 price tag was too much for you to swallow, then Acer also launched a Luxury Gold colour addition to their Swift 3 laptop, which was launched last month.

The Swift 3 is also part of their thin and light line-up, but with a slightly lower spec and profile. Still a powerhorse with up to 10 hour battery life, the Swift 3 sits at 17.9 mm thin, weighing 1.5 kg, comes with an all-aluminium body, 6th Gen Intel Core i5 processor, 256 GB SSD storage, 4 GB RAM memory.

Not too shabby.

Acer Spin 5 – Hybrid Tablet/Laptop

Next in line, is the Acer Spin 5 – which is a hybrid device of a laptop and tablet in one.

Featuring Acer’s patented 360-degree dual hinge, you can switch the device from 4 different modes – Laptop mode for work, Tablet mode for play, Display mode for sharing, and Tent model for confined spaces. Of course, you can also lay the device flat for huddled discussions, which is a feature I love with my past Aspire S7.

Spec wise, the Spin 5 is quite basic – with only Intel Core i3 processor, 128 GB SSD storage and 4 GB RAM memory; but has power up to 10 hours of battery life. More for the casual users and/or students.

Spin 5 retails at a Recommended Retail Price (RRP) of RM 2,199.

Predator Z1

Now, here’s something for you gamers out there. This Predator Z1 is a 27″ curved screen gaming monitor with N-VIDIA G-SYNC technology. It comes with Tobii eye-tracking technology, which was demo-ed on stage that day and looks amazing!

The GameView technology also allows 3 custom profiles (mode) : Action, Racing and Sports; and the AcerVisionCare screen technology comes with Flicker-less, BlueLightShield, ComfyView and low-dimming technology to reduce strain on your eyes.

All these sounds like gibberish to me, as a non-gamer. But for you gamers out there, this one’s for you to drool at.
