If you’ve been checking your Facebook today, you’d likely come across the story of an ostrich on the loose on Federal Highway.
The video quickly went viral on Facebook, getting shared like crazy among my friends online, when it happened around lunchtime on 16 June 2016. Even the online news portals started to cover it, hours later like on The Star Online at 4.48pm.
The Star Online : Life in the fast lane: Ostrich sprints down Federal Highway
A scared animal was loose on a hectic KL highway traffic. While many, like me, found this a surprising and amusing scene, we also worried about the animal’s wellbeing and safety.
However, catching the bird was a delicate manner as it required some “interstate coordination”. “It is difficult as the bird was spotted at the border (between Kuala Lumpur and Selangor),” he quipped.
Now, that’s shocking. An animal is on the loose and someone needed to capture it safely away from harm of traffic, and they’re debating on whether it’s a KL or Selangor jurisdiction? SMH.
Thankfully, a few hours later, The Star published an updated article that the ostrich, named Chickaboo, is actually a friendly ostrich that has made multiple rounds in kids carnival events, petting zoos etc, as part of animal education programmes. And that she has been safely rescued from traffic and is not traumatised, although likely exhausted from the long run.
The Star Online : Owner: Runaway ostrich is affectionate, buddies with Husky, turkeys
“She is extremely curious, very greedy, and is hungry all the time,” said Chow. “She gets along well with my Husky. She will sleep with my Husky and hangs around with a couple of turkeys and dogs.
Just like most netizens, I’m glad to hear Chickaboo is safe and fine. I hope her short spotlight will help ensure she’s well taken care of, and will attract many new friends and visitors at the farm where she’s returned to.
