Experience work and life on the go with Huawei Mate 8

Having used the Huawei Mate 8 for almost a month now, and written the first of my 4 part review last week here, I am still using the smartphone actively as my primary device today.

Just recently, I decided to update my bio on my blog social media accounts. It used to say “THE KL Female Tech Blogger.” Since I started this blog in 2009, my blog posts have evolved. From very tech, to more lifestyle reviews (restaurants, movies, books) to personal posts and rants from time to time.

So I settled with this new bio…

Female Tech Blogger. Marketing Professional. New Mommy.

I guess this is appropriate. It captured my primary tech blogging, my day job as a Marketing person and the recent title I added to my name as a new mother.

With this reflection, I realised that the different facets of my life is not unique. Many of you play multiple roles in life, too.

And with tech, you all probably have different needs for the different roles in your life. While some of us share similar needs, there are possibly specific asks that you have of your tech and gadgets that are unique to you.

So, here in my next review of the Huawei Mate 8, I set out to tell you about how the smartphone fits into my life, from work… to play…

Huawei Mate 8 at work

Yes, I have a day job. Without getting into too much detail on my professional self, I work in a corporate environment just like most of you.

For work, I used my smartphone a lot! From making non-stop phone calls (who uses a landline, am I right?) to checking and replying emails when I’m out and about to texting away in multiple WhatsApp chats to taking quick notes and calendar scheduling to accessing attachments and files on the go. The typical mobile warrior.

I need good battery life from a smartphone. It has to last me a full, extended work day. And from my previous post here, the Mate 8 does the job and beyond.

Next – with all these sensitive corporate emails, texts, files and more. I need good security. Gone are the days where just 4-digit numerical pin, or swipe patterns are good enough.

Nowadays, with more and more devices with fingerprint scanners, this level of security is almost a necessity. The Huawei Mate 8, just like the Honor 7 I have reviewed here before, does amazing with fingerprint recognition. It is so quick, that a quick tap or swipe is all it needs to unlock the devide. You can also set teh swipe gesture to perfomrm other actions, too.

Overall, from a security perspective, other than the typical productivity tools, this fingerprint scan to unlock, is a feature I don’t know how I survived without in the past.

Mate 8 when I blog

When it’s time to get home, and I get to blogging.

Huawei Mate 8 - blogging

While I’m not a fan of blogging with the WordPress mobile app, I do perform other quick actions using my mobile phone for blogging.

For one, the best camera is the one you have in your hand. I used to carry a camera in my bag all the time. Now with the advancement of smartphone camera lens and image quality, I’m happily ditching the camera at home, and snap most of my pictures with the smartphone I use. So camera quality of my primary smartphone is very important to me.

And the Mate 8 doesn’t disappoint.

Here’s 2 sample images of food pics – one in low light, and another in regular lighting.

The 2 images above are the typical pictures I take, almost on a daily basis. Foodporn. You can see that from my Instagram feed.

I love it when food pics comes out so vibrant, vivid and mouth-watering. *drool*

The other thing I do for my blog using my smartphone, is social media. Not only do I perpetuate the fact that an average Malaysian checks their social media 15 times a day, I do that for my personal Facebook, as well as WinnieKepala’s Facebook Page, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and other accounts I manage.

So I need something quick with fast processor speed and doesn’t lag when I swap between apps.

OK – while the Mate 8 can get sluggish at times when I have too many apps running in the background, most of the time, it’s quick enough for my needs.

Mate 8 at home with #babyHEAD

Then, at home. As a new mommy, I have been taking non-stop pictures and videos of my baby.

As a doting mother, I’m biased to say that my baby is the most adorable thing on earth. So I have that urge to document every single action he does, and track his growth and progress as he goes through his many baby milestones in the first year.

The Mate 8 has an amazing 8 megapixel front facing camera that takes great selfies. Just like the Honor 7 I reviewed before, it has “Beauty” mode that smoothens your skin and give it that glow. While I usually turn it off, I am a fan of selfies and wefies.

And at the back is a 13 megapixel Optical Image Stabilisation rear camera. I have to say, having reviewed a few Huawei smartphones, I really am impressed with the work they have done to their camera. It does take great pictures, and I constantly post them raw, as it is, no filter, no adjustments, straight from phone to social media. And they are amazing pictures.

Here’s 2 examples. Images are not edited, just resized.

Yes, all baby pictures. Because he’s cute. Yes, I say so.

A reader (Hi, Gavrihl) messaged me on Facebook after my first blogpost, to ask me about the camera quality of the Mate 8, if I experienced any blurry image issue that is supposedly due to be fixed with a software update. He was concerned after reading this particular article.

Happy to report – No issues here whatsoever with the Mate 8 camera. In fact, I love the camera!

It has taken some really amazing pictures (and video) of me and my baby. And these are pictures of moments that are quick, fleeting and precious shots of my baby growing up. Happy to have them captured perfectly, and stored for eternity, in amazing picture quality.
