Restaurant Review : Sum Hou Bak Kut Teh @ Desa Sri Hartamas

I have an awesome group of girlfriends, who, like me, enjoy good local food finds. We’ve explored different cuisines, from porridge steamboats, to pasar malam walk-and-binge eat. When I discovered this new branch of Back Kut Teh shop opening in Desa Sri Hartamas, I suggested it to the group and off we went to Sum Hou Bak Kut Teh.

Sum Hou BKT (Bak Kut Teh) in Desa Sri Hartamas is actually their original branch. They have another branch in Kuchai Avenue, which I vaguely remember spotting when I was there once.

NOTE : If you needed reminders, Sum Hou BKT serves pork Bak Kut Teh, which is obciously non-halal.

I spotted banners by the roadside for awhile now, from the main road leading into Desa Sri Hartamas shoplots. Took little convincing to the group to try a new BKT place. 🙂

Sum Hou BKT is located on Jalan 22A/70A at Desa Sri Hartamas, same row as Ducati showroom, behind True Fitness gym. Parking may be a little tough around the shoplot. In the day, you have the office people, people running errands, etc. In the night, that road is filled with pubs and bar joints, you’re gonna have to circle around a little, or park nearby and walk.

Ambiance

You likely won’t miss Sum Hou BKT, with its big, bright signage.

There’s not much of a “fancy” ambiance to speak of. It’s a typical Chinese restaurant type of setting – with round tables in side, and a couple more seating outside, for the smokers.

Menu & Pricing

For the main highlight of the meal, you get a choice of the traditional soup or dry version of BKT :-

  • Bak Kut Teh (Soup) set – Small (RM 12), Medium (RM 22), Large(RM 32) or Extra Large (RM 42)
  • Dry Bak Kut Teh set – Small (RM 15) or Large (RM 28)

Whether you prefer a mixture of different types of pork meat – from lean meat (my usual go-to), pork ribs, pork belly, pork tendon, intestines and more.

You can choose to enjoy your BKT with 2 different choices of rice – Onion Rice RM 1.50) or Long Bean Rice (RM 1.80). We stuck to the plain onion rice, instead of the latter. But something tells me I should come back to try the alternative another day.

We got hangry (hungry + angry) by then, and you don’t mess with hangry ladies – so we dig in quite quickly and I didn’t get to take proper pictures. 🙁

On top of the main course of BKT, you can choose from an assortment of other side dishes. Choice of traditional BKT sides like Taufu Pok (aka Tofu Puffs)(RM 5.50), Yao Cha Kuih (aka You Tiao)(RM2.50), Straw Mushrooms (RM 5.50) as well as different type of greens like typical BKT vege, Letttuce (Small RM7, Large RM 10), Okra (aka Ladies Fingers)(Small RM8, Large RM 12), Brocolli (Small RM 8, Large RM12).

Once again, apologies for the blurry pictures.

Salted Fish with Pork Belly (RM 20)

The other highlight side dish of the night, has to go to the Ham Yue Fa Lam Pou aka Salted Fish with Pork Belly (RM 20). The salted fish was nice and flavourful, giving the claypot pork belly dish with dried chillies and spring onion a nice kick. I’m drooling just thinking about it. This is a very nicely done dish, indeed. I would come back just to eat this with white rice.

Because of my blurry pic, not doing justice to such a mouth-watering dish, here’s a clearer, nicer, drool-worthy shot from their Facebook Page below…

Their menu has a number of other interesting side dishes that I would’ve loved to try. Like these delicious lookinng dishes from the Sum Hou BKT Facebook Page below…

Yellow Wine Eggs (RM 10)
Vinegar Pork Leg (RM 15)

Conclusion

There were 4 of us ladies, and we ordered a tonne of food…

Part of the meal for 4 ladies

Started snapping blurry pictures, got distracted with delicious food, started nom-nom-ing, and forgot to take better (or more) shots. 😛

The Bak Kut Teh itself is not the best I’ve had. To be honest, I’ve not had great BKT in awhile. Sum Hou BKT was good. It was delicious. I didn’t have any major complains, as I’m alway shappy to be eating BKT, especially on a chilly / rainy night. 🙂

The highlight of Sum Hou BKT was their Salted Fish with Pork Belly, in my opinion. And the abundance of good side dishes to accompany your BKT meal.

The best part of the whole experience, is to have great company and friends for you to order a bunch of food that you will struggle to finish – because I’m typical Chinese like that – I like lots of food on the table. 😀

Would go again to Sum Hou BKT for sure…
