More announcement – HTC Butterfly 2 and HTC One M8 for Windows

Boy, HTC have been busy! A few days back, HTC made a couple of interesting announcements on the smartphone front – one for Android and another for Windows Phone. Introducing the HTC Butterfly 2 and HTC One M8 for Wndows.

HTC Butterfly 2

On 18 Aug 2014, HTC’s blog announced the availability of HTC J Butterfly HTL23. Yup. It was a little bit of a complicated smartphone name, although HTC has started going a little crazy with their product names lately.

From previous easy-to-remember HTC One, HTC Desire, HTC Butterfly to the current HTC One M8, HTC One E8, HTC Desire 816 and many more code name like product names, I have a feeling nobody in HTC bothered to change the internal code names to a consumer product name. This naming convention looks like it may stick for awhile. *sigh*

Nevertheless, the HTC J Butterfly HTL23 seems to be the name reserved for the Japanese market with their tie-up with JDDI (telco operator) there. For the rest of the Asian country the device is launching as HTC Butterfly 2.

Looking at the spec sheet, it’s almost identical to the HTC One (M8) flagship minus the metal unibody, as the HTC Butterfly 2 is build with polycarbonate (plastic) body. Wait a minute – then it must be identical to the HTC One E8 then? Well, actually, it is quite similar.

HTC Butterfly 2 uses a 13 megapixel rear camera just like the HTC One E8. But it actually has a Duo camera just like the flagship M8. Which means you’ll be able to enjoy UFocus which is selective focus on your pictures. Snap a picture and adjust the focus of the object on the foreground or background and blur the rest.

You have a full 5 megapixel front facing camera for your selfie needs. As with both the HTC One M8 and E8, HTC started focusing on better front facing lens for the selfie community.

You”ll also get HTC BoomSound with dual front facing stereo speakers. You get HTC BlinkFeed as with all HTC smartphones running HTC Sense 6 UI. You get Motion Launch, just like all new HTC smartphones which allows you to use hand motions and gestures to activate certain features without turning on your phone.

HTC Butterfly 2 is waterproof!!!

The most important feature is of course, HTC Butterfly 2 is now waterproof and dustproof like the Samsung Galaxy S5 and Sony Xperia Z2. It’s IPX5 and IPX7 certified, which means you can submerge the phone up to 1 metre of water for a maximum of 30 minutes. This, to me, is the most important feature that was missing from their flagship HTC One (M8) and I’m glad is finally included in the HTC Butetrfly 2.

Pricing and Availability

The HTC J Butterfly HTL23 is available exclusively with JDDI in Japan now.

The HTC Buterfly 2 is the brand for the rest of the world and will initially be available in  Taiwan (Chunghwa Telecom) starting 2 Sep 14. HTC announced that the smartphone will then start to go on sale in other countries, namely  Hong Kong (CSL), India, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand. No indication of dates or pricing yet for Malaysia though.

HTC One (M8) for Windows

A day after the “Butterfly” news, HTC threw us another curve ball by announcing that their flagship Android HTC One (M8) will now have a new version pre-installed and marketed as a Windows Phone 8 device! No crazy code names like HTC One M8 WP81 series, simply HTC One (M8) for Windows.

From a hardware and build quality perspective, it’s exactly the HTC One (M8) Android smartphone. From the dual front facing stereo speakers to the HTC Ultrapixel duo camera, to the support for the HTC Dot View flip case, you get the unprecedented metal unibody and gorgeous design and hardware.

The difference here is the insides, where the smartphone now runs Windows Phone 8.1 OS instead of the Android 4.4 Kit Kat OS.

With Windows Phone 8.1 OS, you get these goodies with the HTC One (M8) for Windows:-

  • Cortana – Windows’s personal digital assistant, aka Siri for Windows, allows you to set appointments, reminders for your next appointment and time to leave, etc
  • Action Center – Access all your notification messages and quick toggles and settings (aka Notification Centre)
  • Apps Corner – separate work and personal info and apps

Additionally to the wonderful hardware build by HTC and the sophisticated OS by Microsoft, HTC One (M8) for Windows is also coverfed by HTC Advantage which is an insurance program that protects your phone for cracked screen replacements, software updates and 15GB  online cloud storage.
